《西潮》里所谈的是中国从一八四二年《中英南京条约》割让香港岛到一九四一年珍珠港事件这一百年间所发生的故事。这段时间乃是历史上一个极不平凡时代的新序幕，举凡人类中各个集团的冲突，乃至东西文化的磨荡，都集中在这风云际会。 蒋梦麟从中国学究的私塾到西洋自由的 学府，从古老的农村社会到近代的都市文明，从身经专制统治的皇朝到接受革命思想的洗礼，他多年生活在广大的外国人群里面，更不断生活在广大中国人群、尤其是知识青年群众里面，他置身于中西文化思想交流的漩涡，同时也看遍了覆雨翻云沧海桑田的世局。《西潮》中所反映的决不是他的一生，而是他一生所经历的时代。

杨步伟（1889—1981），出身南京望族，自幼性格果敢，勇于任事，是中国最早的现代新女性之一。她先后在南京旅宁学堂、上海中西女塾读书。二十岁时，应安徽督军柏文蔚之邀，任崇实女子学校校长。二次革命失败后，到日本东京帝国大学攻读医学，回国后开办“森仁医院”。1920年，与赵元任相识，次年结婚。1938年，全家赴美，此后一直定居美国。著有《一个女人的自传》（Autobiography of a Chinese Woman）、《杂记赵家》（The Family of Chaos）、《中国食谱》（How to Cook and Eat in Chinese）等。

伍连德（Wu Lien-teh，1879-1960），祖籍广东台山，生于槟榔屿。剑桥大学医学博士。1908年归国任天津陆军军医学堂帮办，1910-1911年为防治鼠疫出任东三省防疫总医官，扑灭了鼠疫大流行。1937年返回马来亚，定居怡保行医为业。主要著作有《肺鼠疫论述》《鼠疫概论》《霍乱概论》《中国医史》等。 译者简介： 程光胜， 1958年毕业于北京大学生物系，中国科学院微生物研究所研究员，曾任中国微生物学会秘书长。编著有《显微镜下的生命世界》《小生物，大世界》《方心芳传》等。 马学博，哈尔滨医科大学医史学教研室副研究员，主要从事东北近代防疫史研究。 王丽凤，新加坡电视制作人，美国印第安纳大学大众传播系毕业。电视纪录片《伍连德博士传》的总导演、总监制。
